Islamic architecture in Java, in essence, is inseparable from the existence of culture and traditions that existed before Islam entered the region. Not surprisingly, when in the early days of the entry of Islam in Java, the forms of the mosque still use the traditional architectural style that tends to nuanced Hinduism. For example the use of the canopy roof and the use of mustaka on the top of the roof.
The Building of Faculty of Social and Political Science National Islamic University (UIN) applies modern Islamic building concept, by combined simplicity of modernism and some Islamic pattern ornament.
In general the concept of building mass blocks is based on considerations:
Anticipate hot tropical climates to produce energy efficient buildings.
Produce controlled spaces between buildings.
Adjustment to site conditions.
Functional demands, especially for public meeting buildings and sports facilities.
Consideration of visual images for some buildings that function as landmarks.
Based on these considerations, there are variations in building mass blocks that are adjusted to the priority scale and potential.
· To produce these energy-efficient buildings, a square block of building mass extends east west, with the narrowest facade facing the east and west sun of higher irradiation intensity. This is to reduce the amount of facade that is exposed to direct sunlight, thus helping to create a comfortable micro-temperature in the building.
· By considering building form and massing outside the orientation of the sun, the concept of building mass still refers to tropical buildings that are energy efficient by maximizing sun shade and shade elements or material selection that anticipates heat and humidity.
· The composition of the mass is arranged to produce spaces between buildings that are well-defined, close-scale and at the same time become elements of open space that support natural lighting systems and natural ventilation in buildings
